While looking to buy your first sex-toy, it is hard to know where to start. Maybe a pretty little rabbit or a minimalist egg vibrator, but you’re not sure what to purchase. Sex-care is a necessity, but also a luxury. Sex-toys are expensive, but an investment into your yoni’s well-being. So, how to do you know which vibrator or dildo is right for you, and worth the price tag?
The Ladies Compartment is taking you through the process step-by-step. And, TLC rounded up the best of the best from our favourite site Imbesharam.com!

So, some basics I’m gonna get out of the way. Try and use rechargeable sex-toys. In the long-term, those will it save you a shit ton of money (that you will be spending on batteries, believe you me). Plus, no battery waste = better for the environment.
Material and Maintenance
Remember you’re buying something that will be close and/or inside, so it’s imperative to ensure the sex-toy is skin safe.
Materials such as rubber and jelly are porous, can contain phthalates, which are banned, and difficult to clean. Lingering bacteria and an unclean sex-toy can give you thrush or an UTI. This means that bacteria can linger on the product and could give you thrush. They also contain phthalates, a substance banned from children’s toys because it is harmful to health.
Silicone sex-toys are probably the most commonly bought and used, and for good reason. They’re easy to clean, feel great, and are skin-safe. There are also more options for stimulation-type, automation with silicone toys.
Don’t rule out metal, crystal and glass sex toys though. They’re also are all safe to use, easy to clean as they’re non-porous, and they feel good! With such toys, you will have to stimulate your clit with your fingers while the dildo is inside you. Crystal dildos in particular are my latest fascination, TBH!
#PROTIP: A ribbed glass dildo and a finger vibrator is a delightful combination
Different Lubes For Different Materials
For non-silicone based toys, you can use any lubricant.
Glass and metal sex toys are safe to use with oil, water and silicone based lubricants, however you can’t use silicone lubricant with a silicone sex toy. This is because the silicone will react, leaving a tacky texture and a ruined toy. Water and oil based lubes are silicone-sex toy compatible.
As long as your sex toy is waterproof, the best thing to do wash it with water hot enough to sterilise it, and then a gentle wipe-down with a clean cloth. I use baby wipes or pussy wipes from PeeSafe etc when post-orgasm laziness hits.
#PROTIP: Make it a point to sterilise and clean your sex toy at least once a week, or before and after every use, depending on how often you solo play.
For those of you (me included) who need a bit more than water for your intimate hygiene, there are many options, see below:

Shape
First question to ask yourself: do you want a sex-toy that is phallic (penis-shaped) or no? Either way, we’ve got you, girl. ImBesharam has a plethora of dildos. With most phallic sex-toys, unless they’re smart toys and your preference, you’ll get the option of single, like bullets, or double stimulation, like rabbits.
Here are some bullets I can recommend:
But, just like female pleasure goes deeper than the clit, an equally large (no puns intended) collection of vibrators that don’t look like penises exists. There are benefits to non-phallic vibrators, not the least of which is discretion. (What Indian mum ever lets daughters have privacy, right?)
Here are some phallic variations I can recommend:
Vibrations
Whatever the shape, 70% of women need clitoral simulation to reach orgasms. And, remember, sex-toys that use internal vibrations to make you climax can be used on the outside as well. So, pro-tip: buy a vibrator what can work the inside of your vagina and your clit.
Here are some of my favourite vibrators:
Anal?
If you get excited by anal play, you’re not alone. When done right, anal sex is fun and adds a different vibe. If you’re new to bum pumps (jk), here are my recommendations of starter toys for you:
Size
The size of a sex-toy – phallic or not – depends on personal preference. Some people like their vibrators to be huge, and others do not. If it’s your first time, I’d recommend going for an 4-5 inch sized toy. However, there are some lovely above 7inch sex toys available that do hit the spot! If you’re new to solo play and/or sex, work your way up to those.
My personal favourites of the large kind are:
Or you could go for something lifelike. These are great for strap-on, or if you like being on top (just sit on this sex toy.)
Price!
Vibrators are expensive, especially in India. Sex toys are considered obscene under Indian laws, and so they cannot be manufactured here. Most toys available online are imported, and so there is import/ customs tax. There is no getting around this fact.
But, there are two things you must remember while buying a sex toy:
- a good vibrator is an investment. Think cost per use.
- you get 10% off with your TLC code!
Recommendations by price (inclusive of your 10% TLC discount):
Under Rs 5000
Rs 5000 – Rs 10, 000
Rs 10,000+
For Long-Distance or Quarantined Couples, I highly recommend:
For penis-vagina using couples: get yourselves a Nora and Max! The pair can be synced via a private app, each toy can be controlled by both partners: this is as close to in-person sex as you can get without being in person!
For penis-owning couples think of investing in Lovense Hush wireless butt-plug, whose sizes go up to 1.75 cms.
For vulva and vagina-owning couples: the world of sex toy is made for you. I used Nora paired with Lush during my last long-distance relationship. Sex was never a problem for us, suffice to say.
There are also some super strap-ons and harnesses:
For a stand alone like this Pegastick, you’ll need to have a separate harness:
Lube Up!
Use the lube, people. There’s no shame in getting wetter. Keep in mind that: you shouldn’t use silicone-based lubricant with silicone sex-toys; water or oil-based lubricants are compatible with silicone sex-toys. For non-silicone based toys, it’s you can use any lubricant.
Water-based lubricants are my preference because they’re not sticky, work for all manner of toys, materials, and tend to have more natural ingredients.
These are water-based lubricant that I’ve used and can recommend:
This is my new favourite lube, for solo and couples play:
